Dan was born in Porth in the Rhondda and educated at Cowbridge Grammar School, Llandovery College, and King's College, London University where he read Law. He was the recipient of an ESU Scholarship to study in the USA . As a Marketing Executive he worked for Ford of Europe, the Wales Tourist Board and British Tourist Authority and the Rank Organisation. In the mid 80's he founded his own company in partnership with his brother, selling in the mid 1990's to Royal Insurance. Using the proceeds to create two property companies which he still manages. A lifetime supporter of the heritage, he has been active for over 40 years in many organisations dedicated to conserving both historic houses, buildings and gardens. He was the first Secretary of the HHA in Wales, Deputy Chair of the National Trust in Wales, first Chairman of the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Chairman of The Heritage Lottery Fund Wales, and Deputy Chair of the HHA for the UK. A founder member of the Welsh Historic Gardens Trust and the Cowbridge Physic Garden, he remains active in seeking to preserve our heritage.
