Eco-conscious consumers will be able to start using their reusable coffee cups once more at The Potting Shed from the 14th September. 119 experts from 18 countries concluded that reusable containers pose no substantial threat to the public during the Covid-19 pandemic.

As long as reusable vessels are thoroughly washed, reusable cups, bottles and jars, they can be safely used without spreading the virus, according to a statement signed by virologists, epidemiologists, biologists, chemists and doctors.

“Based on the best available science and guidance from public health professionals, it is clear that reusable systems can be used safely by employing basic hygiene,” the statement reads.

The statement was co-ordinated by Greenpeace, and UK signatories include academics from the University of Exeter, Oxford University and the University of London.

It states that Covid-19 is mainly spread through droplets from coughs, sneezes and heavy breathing, rather than contact with contaminated surfaces. Because reusable containers can be washed thoroughly with hot water and detergent, they are safe to use, it says.

“The bottom line is that reusable items are safe to use when cleaned with soap and water, and there is no substitute for thorough hygiene,” the statement reads.

As a precaution, we will adopt “contact free” systems for customers’ reusable cups.

The Potting Shed’s reusable cup system will include the following steps:

  • We will only accept cups that appear to have been washed thoroughly.
  • We will not accept the responsibility of washing and sanitising your vessels on your behalf due to the time necessary on busy working days.
  • We will ask you to place your vessel, with the lid removed on a tray and use contactless methods to avoid contact with the vessel during preparation of your drink.
  • Once your drink has been prepared, the tray will be placed back in front of you for collection.
  • The tray will then be washed and sanitised for future use.
