Carved In Stone: Renovation Insights

As part of the ongoing renovation work at Insole Court, scaffolding has been erected around much of the Mansion to facilitate essential repairs to the roof. On a recent inspection to view the progress, our CEO Lloyd Glanville took his camera to record the work for posterity. This provided a rare opportunity to see some of the intricate stone work on upper elevations up close. Below is a selection of imagery, detailing the gargoyles, grotesques, friezes and architectural flourishes that demonstrate James Harvey Insole’s desire for Neo Gothic design.

As you can see, some of them are in need of care, weathered by almost 150 years overlooking Llandaff. However, the definition on some is still remarkably clear and shows just how playful the designers were allowed to be.

The renovation work is made possible by the generous support of The National Heritage Memorial Fund, Cadw and Cardiff Council.
